 Kim Kerrigan: Consumer Executive |
Today she is living independently in a flat in Sandringham with friends, and she’s got new skills which have enhanced her opportunities.
“I found out about the gardens at Framework and was encouraged to apply. At first it seemed like really hard work but today it’s different… “I feel so much better, I’m active and learning to communicate with people and friends in order to be able to tell them how things are going in my life.”
Kim is also chuffed that her colleagues had faith in her, nominating her to be a member of the Consumer Executive Committee at Framework.
“I like to help people, support them and, if need be, defend their cause. I never used to be able to talk to groups of people but now I feel much more confident.”
She says about her schizophrenia: “I think it has improved over the years and that’s helping me with my personal relations and communications.”
After working at Kelmarna Gardens in Herne Bay, Kim says she’d be lost without the daily joy of gardening.
“I’ve learnt gardening skills which are always useful and it has helped me apply for gardening work.
Kim also gets offers from friends to help in their gardens and often obliges.
“I didn’t know a weed from a plant when I started. Now I’ve got a good knowledge of vegetable gardening and I’ve gained experience and knowledge. It’s very therapeutic and quite relaxing; it’s good physical exercise which is good for my health.”
